GitHub shipped its July Copilot updates for VS Code and Visual Studio on 30 July.
These monthly posts get less attention than a model launch, and they usually matter more. A new model is a line in a picker; an editor update changes what happens when you press a key.
Where the July work went
Read against the rest of the month, the editor releases are the delivery mechanism for everything else GitHub shipped. Four new models arrived in July, agent skills and MCP went GA in code review, and cloud agents gained a reasoning-level control — all of that has to surface somewhere a developer can reach it.
That somewhere is the editor. This is the release that connects the changelog to your keyboard.
How to actually pick these up
Two practical notes:
- Editor features ship on the editor's release cadence, not GitHub's announcement date — if you have automatic updates disabled, you are reading about features you do not have
- Check the Copilot version inside your editor rather than assuming, especially on Visual Studio where update cycles run longer
The unglamorous advice
If you follow one thing from GitHub each month, make it this post rather than the model announcements. Model choice changes your output at the margin. Editor behaviour changes it every minute you work.
